It’s almost as if nothing has ever happened.

Almost, because when the light bursts, your eardrums almost rupture from the screaming: the Blasphemer, denied Their freedom once more, dragged unwillingly into sleep. But as the Miller’s Lullaby takes hold, it finds its voice, its powers muffled, muted, until finally, it slumbers again, pinned by the Bane in its ritual room. The wards glow in their slots, recalling their purpose, and the oppressive atmosphere lifts. For the first time in months, you realise - you can breathe again. The winter winds outside howl, but now they sound like a scream in triumph.

As you all emerge back onto the streets of Draycott, there are still scars of the damage: deep gouges of Earth, scorched building sides, and more than one particularly drenched-looking building. There are dissolving mounds of snow-like fog on the asphalt, unseeing faces melting into nothing. But Draycott has no fog, the cold is appropriately bitter, and the sun is beginning to pour in through the clouds. As if even nature has heaved a sigh, filled with relief.

There are, of course, casualties. Plenty of them. Mikel, for a start, has managed to burn the skin off both his hands while handling the sword, while Melia is having mild difficulty glamouring herself back into being human again. Samuel has a broken arm and a leg, while Kieran might have several fractured ribs. Faron’s suffered a few ugly gashes to his side, and Tate emerges with half of her body shimmering in and out of view. She doesn’t seem particularly concerned about it, even while Mikel panics.

In the weeks to come, there is rebuilding to be done. Sirvan and Dominic throw themselves back into the efforts, making a census of who has vanished, who has survived, and then identifying which parts need to be renovated. Aimee keeps order the best she can, keeping the townsfolk safe and sending them back to their homes. By some miracle, no one’s home was completely destroyed. When there is time, Dominic makes sure to make time for Annabeth - and even when he can’t, he likes to sneak out of work to a cafe of sorts, where he takes a much deserved break.

Some of the townsfolk have returned to their homes - or rather, are discovered unconscious, sea-water soaked on the shore, but alive. Annabeth’s grandmother is one of the first to be found, and Dominic drags her to safety as soon as he spots her. Zain is - returned, but no one is quite sure if it’s for good or for ill. His left arm is completely withered, and no one is sure if magic or pure, physical exertion. The first person who finds Zain is Samuel, who - now having settled into a comfortable relationship with Genevieve, has decided to extend his working holiday for another year. He hopes to find a job to stay with her for a while.

Renier’s leg manages to heal finally - finally - within weeks of the fog lifting. He’s eager to go back on his world tours, but he knows he’s rusty, out of practice - and he’s quite aware that hosting a concert here in Draycott would be a good celebration of the town’s survival. He intends on asking Ariana to guest star, but he’s a tiny bit nervous about her reaction. As for his neighbour Bentram - fortunately, all his students are back safe and sound, as if the fog left the children untouched. He’s also rather eager to continue his relationship with Jade - perhaps she’d agree to staying in Draycott as an English teacher? He could hope, right?

With Draycott reverting to normalcy, Donovan deftly steers more tourists back towards the town. His long life means he has plenty of contacts - powerful ones, and soon, Draycott is bustling again. He’s been spotted with Scarlette on various occasions: sometimes at the speakeasy, sometimes on the High Street, and sometimes in places left very discreetly unsaid. Yasaman and Rafe have struck up a budding relationship too - antagonistic, with a lot of snarking, but by all accounts, they seem content.

The Draycott Research Group isn’t abandoned - the non-cursed objects that have been retrieved are still very much examinable, and yield a host of useful information for archaeologists and historians alike. Janine has stepped into the role, and slowly, Zain rejoins, more tempered, but still enthusiastic. Still, they record what happened with Draycott in their own files and put a copy in the Library’s Archives - perhaps to be used at a later date.

As a result, both Kieran and Faron stay on as well, helping with the salvage and the back-and-forths. Faron has come under Janine’s tutelage, and in between his expeditions and seeing Dakota, he’s getting more and more training in history and analysis. He’s also considering asking Dakota - if she stays in Draycott - to move in with him. He’s not sure if he wants to stay in the same house as Kieran, or move next door, because… staying in the same house as Kieran is a bit like moving your girlfriend in with your dad.

Tate stays in Draycott for a spell. She’s grown fond of the people, she says, though some people mutter that she’s not going unless Alex is. On clear, bright days, people spot the two of them by the shoreline - accompanied, of course, by Cody. On other days, she’s found with Mikel and Melia in the forest, with the comforting stone pillars. They say they’re remembering what has happened, and what was lost.

When all this has settled, one day, two smart black cars pull in - a Bentley and a Maybach, to be exact. It causes a stir, because they come into the Town Hall, and out step a group of people bearing a strange ensign on their briefcases. The visitors radiate… power as they wander in, commanding an old, deep respect politicians would kill to have. They go in, speak to Sirvan, and then re-emerge a few hours later. They dine at the Grand Metropole Hotel, invite Zain Dawson to find them - and then the next day, all of them vanish, the group and Zain. Janine and Yasaman, when asked, say that he’s been given a new posting. There are no more details.

(The rumour mill has it that when Tate found out about it mid-shift, her usual, warm, bartending mask dropped and she swore the air blue around her. She was spotted a few hours later yelling at someone down the phone, but no one quite heard what the conversation was about.)

But for now, Draycott is saved, and Mh’ilerh is sealed away - for good, one hopes. And if They were ever to re-emerge, there’s a hastily bound book with the precise instructions on what to do, and where they need to go.

So! Here we are, end of the line. For starters, no one died. And no one got eaten up or driven mad by the hungry Eldritch being at the bottom of the sea. Yay!

During the contest set-up, I mention that this was as much a testing ground for me as it was for you. For me, it was to test a few things that you’ll have figured out now: investigations, roles, and if it was possible to run a full blown mystery. In some aspects, it worked. In others… not so much. You know the analogy of how a duck looks graceful in water, but is actually paddling frantically beneath the surface? That’s me, but with ten times less grace and a hundred times more screaming. Oh, and sometimes the duck sinks like a stone to the bottom of the pond. Feel free to imagine a screaming duck sinking to the bottom of the pond now.

I set out to try and mix horror and mystery, where you could control - to some extent - the way the story ended. And while it looks like it was linear: it wasn’t. There were about three big decision points: the most obvious one was the ending, but the other two were 1) Sirvan’s survival and 2) the result of the initial siege in Round 4. The way I set it up meant those variations depended on who wrote what in their story, and the items/clues you guys collected, how much you pieced together - and the ending would change.

Not sure how much it worked, but I like to think there was some modicum of success.

Other possible endings

A couple of big decisions that affected things… click here if you want to be spoiled

So, from me, a big, massive thank you to everyone who joined up in this contest, who willingly tolerated my faults, my lack of logic, my venting and babbling, and the fact that ultimately, this was one giant story writing experiment. I’m a very inexperienced, extremely rusty host. One whose past contests (as some can testify) involved a vague round outline, a paragraph’s worth of extra descriptions, and absolutely no impressions. Or personal tasks. Or… whatever I was doing to your poor, abused mailboxes this time around.

(I can’t afford therapy for the mailboxes though, so please don’t send me the bill.)

I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you understood most of what was going on in this contest at the end of things. I hope you liked the stories, the paper people, the setting, the investigation chains, the lore. I know I did, though I’ll be the first to admit I underestimated how much writing this would take and how much organising I had to do. As a reference point, my word count for everything I’ve written in this contest right now sits at 90,000+ words. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Please find the banners below, and no, the lack of a winner is not a mistake. For one very obvious reason: you all poured so much time and effort, and it was patently unfair to determine who was the “best story” as this was a painful, long haul. I loved every bit I read, the characters, the relationships. So here are the banners - and of course, a certain Aether couldn’t resist getting in on the action either.  I’m not good with Photoshop - or Affinity Photo for that matter - but I can write a tiny little bit.

Banners (In alphabetical order by username)

And please, send feedback my way. If you loved it, hated it, thought it was too much - and as long as you want, because I will be tweaking the mechanics. Some stuff I already want to change, like spreading the clues out more evenly between characters and locations, so people wouldn’t miss out simply because they didn’t have so-and-so in their interests. Or dividing up the information into bigger chunks. Or me preparing better ahead of time, so I don’t have to improvise so much on the spot…

… Also, I might just go straight on next time to hosting something nice and straightforward. No mysteries. No investigations. Just - straightforward mayhem. I’m thinking cursed pineapples. We’ll see. Till next time!

Thank you, so much, my scaredy tendency were on full-blown until you told me to think more on the mystery side (I do love a good mystery) Whic made it easier also because Jade was a lot braver than I will ever be would have run away a long time ago, creepy sea town (No, thank you), but you made me enjoy it horror mystery and all, (Glad you didn't kill anyone but reading your response it sounded like one wrong move and it could have been over)

Writing Jade was awesome didn't expect to be writing such a snappy romantic story in a horror-mystery contest but enjoyed it nonetheless. Coming up with her I wanted a though exterior but super sweet inside and I loved how she turned out, her story will go down as one of my favourites.

So ones again, thank you, you made me enjoy writing again.

Tips and tricks>> No clue I hosted only one contest and know how much work it was behind the scene and seeing how great you were in giving out clues in every round for different location, Jadis, you got my respect. Cannot wait for your next, but you deserve a well rested break /vendor/beemoov/forum/../../../public/forum/smilies/wink.png

I think I have already told you how much I liked the contest, but perhaps I should state it here as well, for I liked it a great deal.

I do love that our choices had such great consequences on the overall story, and it’s impressive to see how different it all could have turned out, had we chosen otherwise. That said – I’m very glad out characters got to survive this, it’s amazing how fond one can become of paper people.

Honestly, this was such a thrilling ride. I loved it and all its spooks so much. My favourite parts would have to be when I wrote especially freaky scenes while listening to the playlist hahaha. I think there was even a period where I freaked myself out I had to switch to happy music xD

The characters were all so fun to read and interact with and it brought out a side of Dakota I didn't even know was there.

I loved the banners and Dakota's one was extremely fitting. I didn't see that one coming when I brought her to That Perfectly Ordinary Town that wasnt even the slightest bit ordinary. Again, loved every single bit.

Cursed pineapples? Bring it on. *Insert SpongeBob theme song here*

Thank you for hosting this contest. I'm sure it took a lot of time and hard work to come up with such a story along with the impressions and the rest. I really enjoyed it and also liked your writing  /modules/forum/img/smilies/bimbo/amoureuse.gif

This contest was intense! Thank you so much for all the effort you went to with it. I do still wish that there had been much more time allotted to this contest so that we could have given all of your hard work a much better showing (at least for me). I truly felt connected to the people in my story and I wanted to give them so much more than I had time to give.

You did a LOT with this, there were so many moving parts and so much to handle.

Once again, thank you for your hard work and for giving us a world that not only forced us to be involved, but also drew us in. At least for me, I got pretty emotional over my paper person in your world!

Thank you all for your lovely words! <3

Yeah, I definitely agree though - there are things that could be streamlined, or at least not within what is allotted in the rules at the moment. But having fun in a world is as much as the participants make it, and you all certainly breathed life into what was originally a bunch of loose concepts and... uh, borrowed ideas.

If you guys can pick out where I took the song from what, you'll have a fairly good run list of where my inspirations came from.

See you all in the contest - or around!
