Hi hello everyone so I won’t write too much here I want to post the characters beforehand so everyone has the time to pick and we need not waste time on that part. I am very excited to embark on this adventure with you.

I’d really love if you posted your picks here before the contest if you still want to join and just tell me if you have any expectations because it’s impossible for me to know what you want unless you say something.

Make like 3 or 4 choices on people and post it. If I am slow to respond to personal messages it’s because I have two mathematics exams and a sick baby I love hearing everyone’s thoughts just slow on the reply sometimes. I might remember there’s something else but at the moment I am too tired to remember so let us start here.

For the extras keep personalities in mind but feel free to make them fit into your stories they are extras and not main characters. Also feel free to make them the bad guy or the other way around relationships aren’t always good and we have all hurt people intentionally or not and we do not like everyone.

Also you all have your own universe unless you want to merge with someone else I will view it like this which means you can have the same love interest as someone else so don’t feel restricted from someone else choosing a character. You’ll have two different stories and dynamics.

And their traits go together with the personality not without. And they really know everyone on the crew obviously they spend months on the same boat they talk and spend time with everyone.

When rounds closes they are closed.
This means I’d rather you write a short summary of round events and talk to me than spend time on a “dead round”. Need one more extra day? That’s fine but tell me, but if you haven’t started with the round do a summary and move on.

So closed rounds = no more writing on them

You can skip a round or jump because that’s real life it happens.

Post a first draft. I really want to read your story and have something for impressions. Post that first draft it’s okay I can see where you want to go.
If you finish a round early, great I’ll give you material for the next one early so you can plan with your real life.

The Captain — Kai

Capable, loyal and caring Kai easily puts himself in other peoples shoe’s and that is his strength. Kai keeps himself neutral and calm until the last second and seldom reveals where he stands on a subject. You need to trust that he’s got your back which he does and is an excellent mentor.

Kai doesn’t play games and doesn’t tolerate frilly answers, when someone fails or strays he tends to remind them of all the things they’ve done well rather than scold. He’s soft spoken and gentle unafraid to admit he’s made a mistake. Yet he has always been a rebel with a cause and will do anything so that the crew can reach their goals.

Dedicated to the cause, tenacious with a pragmatic mind one day he’s set to be the new Captain. Gar is fervent which usually is shown in dicy situations and lives for adventure (read danger) when he can laugh death in the face. Gar used to have a hard time connecting with people he usually cares little, these days he’s close with the crew. Outside of working hours he’s fairly goofy and lacks understanding of normal life since his has only ever revolved around the army.

Lacking in basic education, he’s also highly unorganized and owns few earthly possessions. He’s really the awkward high school orchestra kid when he’s goofy but it’s the military instead of a music interest. Heavy believer that what happens, happens and drinks himself silly on big occasions.

At first glance Elliot appears timid until you get to know him and he opens his mouth, he rarely speaks out of turn. Elliot has an air of aristocratic foolish behavior winning everyone over with charm and childish haughtiness a perpetual state of never merging into manhood. For all his savviness and knowledge of the opposite sex he’s a tragic flirt by design.

Elliot clings to the innocence in the world not naively just maybe because he feels he has nothing left himself. He’s seen more brutality than most and unusual kindness blossom in a pit of tar, he knows the ins and outs of this world. After the war he suffers from stiffness and tremors in his right arm after being shot which he tries to hide out of frustration. He’s unsure who the man staring back at him in the mirror is these days.

Often ends up in embarrassing situations and they keep replaying inside his mind years after.

Never saying no tires his soul and he’s more of a smiling doormat for people to wipe their shit on he should stand up for himself but he doesn’t. Milo’s got a big heart of kindness and a wide smile where the war seeped into his soul but that self-medication seems to keep him upright most of the time.

The good doctor who doesn’t judge because he has not always been the most moral himself nor lead the good life he ought to have but at least he’s honest— just not with himself at all times. Centered and grounded from large feet perhaps he should try putting one in his mouth it would be less embarrassing when he starts rambling.

Playing close to her strength she takes her position seriously onboard and is seen as formidable. Maeve is a realist often coming off as offensive and officious she finds this preferable. Preferable to be hurt by her than someone who means those whom she loves harm later down the line.

Maeve has even put the captain in his place a few times with reprimands. She can dish it but can’t take criticism.

While he’s absolutely full of shit (and himself) he’s also someone everyone loves an absolute charmer and unafraid of being laughed at or with. The ash from his cigarette always misses the tray, he doesn’t see limitations or rules.

Vic will physically run from his problems while being hard to rattle he’s unwilling to face the world head on. While surprisingly likable the world often crashes around him and the ones close to him due to his decisions and carelessness. Highly untrustworthy and one day life might not unfold kindly for him— or he’ll find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Connections
Nita went on a very last-minute expedition trip with Vee last year, and the trip brought them together. She wouldn't call them friends, but they were on track to becoming friends, she is certain. Her death came as a shock, a wave of sadness that might have seemed irrational considering they were not close, but it still made a permanent mark.

A few years back, when Ulrich had a tenure at Oxford, Nita became friends with Cas, who was already a professor there. They hit it off, almost immediately, and she managed to get close to him in the following months.

Back when she was Anita Von Eckhardt, she met Dorothea Denhart - the two became Nita and Thea quickly, and were very close during their teenage years, especially during the time Ulrich came into the picture. While Thea was not the biggest fan of Ulrich, she accepted the choice Nita made. The two kept in touch - letters, photos, calls, even very random meetings after hours on the train for a few days before it was time to go back to reality. The long-distance relationship seemed deeper than all those in her proximity.

While spending time in England, Ulrich made quite a few friends, usually entertaining the company of some students, some faculty members, and their friends - relationships ranging from platonic to romantic. While Nita spent time in Egypt, Ulrich spent time befriending Vicente and through him he met Meave. Meave, an old friend of Laura Carmine, walked into a gathering hosted by the Carmines in their countryside cottage, leaving with Ulrich. They were inseparable for a few months, before things went back in full circle and at one party such as the one where they met, Nita arrived late, sunkissed, and rather okay with what she walked into. Nita believed she would have made friends with Laura and Vicente easily had she only been someone else's wife. The extent of information Ulrich gave Meave was beyond her, but it was clear he kept some things to himself. Nita had no issue with Meave, but she never truly got the time to tell her that.

Triss isn’t the most social person, especially around people she doesn’t know yet. She tends to be awkward and cautious and needs a while to get used to new people… and time to warm up and feel comfortable talking about herself. She doesn’t always pick up on social clues and wouldn’t recognize if someone is flirting with her until they spell it out for her. This is one of the reasons she prefers books instead… they don’t talk with her and they don’t ask questions. She has always been a hard-working person and usually, she is the one who doesn’t mind staying longer than necessary or covering classes should it be needed… it has reached a point where a workaholic would be the better description for her behavior. Triss can be stubborn and her colleagues often joke that either hell will freeze over or that pigs learn how to fly before she will admit being wrong. Has always been determined especially if her mind is set on something and once on the path to reaching her goal there is nothing that can make her change her mind. Over-punctual and she will be at least 15 minutes early… whether it is for work, appointments, or whenever she is meeting any of her friends but Triss is patient and doesn’t mind waiting… if only to enjoy a few moments for herself. She has nerves of steel… the talent to remain calm and collected in situations where others would have long freaked out or gotten loud. Likes to keep her workplace organized, keeps track of her classes and important meetings and absolutely can’t stand it when people mess with her order. She is selfless always putting others in front of her needs and tends not to notice that she is the one needing help until it gets too late… Triss finds it hard to ask for help… even harder to accept it and simply prefers to do everything herself. Intelligent and reads a lot when she is truly interested in a subject… her preference varies from books about mythology and history, and lately, she has been delving into crime books as well. Triss is rather serious, tends to be quieter and more thoughtful than others, and doesn't always show that she is capable of laughing… her friends often tell her to loosen up. Loyal to the core and cares a lot once she truly likes someone... only has a small circle of friends whom she all trusts and would do anything for.

History:

Triss is the oldest child of Patrick and Elena Grace Crawford (née Holloway)... sister to Rosalie and Lucas. She grew up on the outskirts of Rochester in a house that had already belonged to her grandparents. She had a loving childhood and would spend most of her days playing in the garden or reading one of the many books she was given by her father. Ever since Triss was a little girl she loved listening to stories... even creating a few of her own as she grew older.

Being at school wasn't the easiest time for her... she had problems settling in and didn't find it easy to make friends. It got slightly better over the next years, but Triss was never going to be the one making the first step. She worked hard for her grades despite struggling with a few subjects - Mathematics and Physics - but History was without any doubt her true passion.

After graduating from High School, Triss had a few options for University when a letter arrived at the Crawford Home. It was from Elena's older sister Alice who had moved to the United Kingdom 20 years ago because she wanted to see more of the world. She was now a Professor at Cambridge - and an Alumni - and knowing of Triss' graduation she offered her a spot at Cambridge. It wasn't an easy decision to make and not both of her parents agreed with Triss, but she knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The first half-year in Cambridge was a mess... Triss felt like a stranger most of the time, missing her family more than she could have ever imagined and she had been close to dropping everything and going back to Rochester. But with her aunt's support and her small group of friends, she managed to pull through. Mythology became her specialization over the next years... Greek and Roman myths became her favorite, but she grew fond of some English tales over the years.

The offer to stay at Cambridge as a professor of Mythology came unexpectedly and this time Triss found it even harder to make a decision. She took a little break and traveled back to Rochester to make up her mind... 5 months later she was back in Cambridge after accepting the offer. Triss keeps close contact with her parents - both retired - and her siblings - both have their own families now - and tries to visit them at least once a year.

Over the past few years, Triss discovered her interest in Norse Mythology as well and she published three books. During one of her research projects, she met fellow Professor Christopher Shaw... they shared the same passion and fascination for History and Mythology. She was 28 when they got engaged much to her parent's joy, but the wedding never happened. It was Triss who broke off the engagement after realizing that she might be rushing into a marriage that she wasn’t quite ready for her yet… feeling far too comfortable in the current state of her life.

Connections

Mike: He is still somewhat of an unknown factor for Triss. She can count the number of conversations they had on both hands ever since he joined Vertatis. Still hasn't fully warmed up to him and still tends to act a bit awkward and skittish around him. 

Maeve: Closest friend of Triss... the one who has always been on her side during the first few months after she joined Vertatis and the one who helped Triss to feel truly comfortable. She is glad for the friendship even if they don't always see each other but both of them try to catch up with each other whenever they can.

Elliot: Another good friend of hers... likes his caring nature and that he is always up for some company whenever they are around each other. Triss took notice of his behavior of trying to "steal" souvenirs but she isn't sure if she is the right person to point it out.

Milo: Likes his company and the easy-going friendship that had developed between them over the year. He never made her feel uncomfortable or was pushing her to open up while they were still trying to get to know each other. Often spend time with each other around the boat and on missions.

Kai: She has a lot of respect for him... likes the way he has been handling things ever since he had been appointed as the new Captain. Certainly considers them friends and enjoys every conversation with him... no matter how brief it might be.

Thea: Despite Thea sometimes intruding into Triss's life whenever they met up... like randomly showing up unannounced during one of her travels, they
managed to become good friends. It took Triss a while though to get used to this behavior... now she is glad for the impromptu visits even if they never last long.

Vee: They were friends... her death - her murder - hit Triss hard. The fact that the killer is still on the loose leaves an unsettling feeling in her stomach.

Behind the Mask; Who is Niambi?

Traits:
Ambitious, confident, logical, resourceful, stubborn, clumsy, naive, reckless.

Personality:
Having been sheltered most of her life by the limitations placed on women and the implications of being bastard-born, she has little experience with friendships and the wider world. As far as Niambi is concerned, she can do anything she wants in this world. Her naivety is shattered somewhat upon entering university, but she’ll go on confidently nonetheless, both stubbornly and awkwardly determined to achieve the goals she has set for herself. Like her father, she is quite willing to dedicate all of her time and energy to the hidden depths of the world. She is willing to go anywhere and do anything in pursuit of knowledge and a desire to earn a name for herself in the field of Archeology.

Unintentionally, Niambi may blurt out inner thoughts or even have full-blown vocal conversations with herself when she’s pondering intrinsic details of ruins or linguistic carvings. She can also be impatient and quite reckless once she’s determined a course of action.

Despite her ineptness with social situations and people in general, Niambi knows her own value and doesn’t feel the need to prove herself to individuals having no impact on her career goals. She actually prefers working alone or with a select few that she can learn from as opposed to partnering up with novice peers. Losing out on an internship in Greece was nothing more than a roadblock, one with which she has no intention of interfering with her ambitions.

When she isn’t knee-deep at a dig site, Niambi will likely be found curled up with a book of literature… art… or science… anything really. It was not uncommon for her to then trip over the pile of books that would be discarded on the floor. Being prone to accidents has nearly stopped her father’s heart a time or two (or so he’s told) when she’s gone feet-first into unsafe conditions or stumbled and fumbled about on dig sites. Though it should be noted, she’s rarely caused any lasting damage or harm and is quite cautious when handling ancient artifacts.

Niambi has little to no combat skills and hasn’t been in any situation that might call for such actions on her part. Whenever she is particularly anxious about something she will resort to drawing and painting as a way of relieving stress.

She has no desire for a husband… or perhaps it’s just that no man has proven to be the companion to the lifestyle she seeks, much to her mother’s chagrin. Niambi refuses to be a wife and little more… playing the role her mother has had all her life. And while she believes that her mother was genuinely happy with her workaholic father, Niambi knows that she would be miserable sacrificing her dreams for a marriage like her parents. She is determined to make her mark, one way or another.

Sand's In Time: Niambi's Beginning...

Niambi was born in Cairo, Egypt, and couldn’t have been more different than Kahia Ezz. Her mother was sweet and calm… sensitive and demure. Compliant. Instead, she’d mimic her father’s bad behaviors almost as if he were a God worth worshiping. German-born Fritz Schulze never married his Egyptian mistress though he provided handsomely for her and their daughter’s needs. They wanted for nothing and were considered well-off in comparison to other families in the area. And he was a constant figure in Niambi’s life growing up, in large part due to the extensive research grants he’d obtained for his work investigating and uncovering ancient relics and ruins throughout the Giza Plateau. It was through his presence and protection that both Kahia and Niambi avoided life in the harems and were isolated in general from the effects of the British and French occupation of Cairo.

Like him, Niambi became obsessed with the history and knowledge gained sifting through the sands at her feet. While Fritz cared deeply for his family, his true passion was his work. Once he recognized Niambi's insatiable hunger for academia he would start to indulge her curiosity, even celebrating it. The pair would spend hours conversing over art, history, and the finds from the excavation. Fritz would also arrange extensive academic tutoring to compensate for any lack in his own education several days per week for his daughter's astonishing intellect. In her free time, Niambi dogged his footsteps through the excavation sites where she spent most of her days. She never imagined how different her upbringing was to other girls and had absolutely no concept of the stigmas she'd carry as a result of her parent's unlikely and immodest relationship.

Niambi would go on to study archeology at the University of Oxford in England where she’d finally learn firsthand the fickleness of 'polite' society. Despite earning accolades and praise from her professors, she would be ostracized by her peers over her parentage and nationality. None of which would change during the course of her studies leaving her both bitter and dismissive of what she came to consider British snobbery. It wasn't all bad though, she would eventually study under renowned professor Andreas Doukus, a Greek for whom Niambi would develop a crush. Near the end of her studies, he would secure an interview for an internship joining an excavation team at the temple of Apollo in Thebes, Greece. She would learn she’d been rejected due to inexperience when news arrives that her father suffered a heart stroke.

Her mother nursed Fritz while Niambi assisted his partner, Leopold Dietrich in continuing her father’s work. The years leading up to the Great War made Fritz wary as he feared the escalating tensions between Britain, France, and Germany. With the discovery of Machu Picchu by an American Explorer, Fritz arranged an expedition into Peru to advance German interest in the area. He sent his team and family ahead while he stayed behind to coordinate the closing of the Cairo site. However, he would be detained and interned by the British before he could escape the growing hostilities in Egypt. Fritz would be held for years and would eventually die during an influenza outbreak mere months before the end of the war.

Niambi harbors resentment towards both the British and German governments for failing to protect her father in the end.

crow’s nest

Vivianne upheld the life of an archeologist even after her untimely death. Piles upon piles were roughly yet neatly stacked against the walls of the apartment now pillaged by an enthusiastic Sev diving head first while pivoting.

“Once witnessed him fighting a crow over a silver coin,” Vic gestured with finicky fingers in passing towards twiddling his mustache on top of a crooked grin.

“Historic value?” Arthur lit a cigarette between a mumble.

“Probably not,” standing in the archway between kitchen and living room, - “he got tweaked balls and we laughed,” he mused tapping his foot.

Sev’s head popped up from one of the piles, fingers clutched like the creature from Lord of the Rings around a worn out leather book, - “wingspan of two meters out of this world.”

“What have we said about lying?”

“I swear it,” he knocked himself in the chest with the book and coughed.

“And now?” Smoke puffed and eyes traveled across the room.

“Atlantis—“ Sev’s eyes sparked.

“Their shared passion they were a hand and a glove,” Vic gestured by slapping his hand together and shaking them a cigarette now hanging from his lips.

“She wasn’t murdered over it.”
“How’d you know?” Sev questioned.
“Confirmed victim of a serial killer.”
“You don’t—“
“Confirmed.”

“You gave Vic drawings of markings at the crime scene!” Sev spat out and jumped to his feet.

“Wooah—“ Vic held his hands out, - “for clues on the serial killer not Atlantis which we’d all be thrilled if the road led to but it never has. Not once—“

“It will—“ Sev replied with gritted teeth and a receding pulsating vein.

setting just to give an overview

The roaring twenties overpowering the memories of war chivalry is still alive, prohibition (indulge me with it being apart of England) in full swing and the ladies are stepping deeper into working pants claiming more space in society than just being at home. Those within Vertatis are aware that in this world there’s more than meets the eye or most  of them some are still sceptic. On this front we are just diving into the mystical nothing too out of this world so your character can be superstitious, a believer or think it’s garbage.

We are operating at this being the 1920’s having a car and driver’s license was still a luxury. Telephone calls were relayed by an operator etc. but we are always going to stray a little with technology not too far but it might not always be according to the time because I am no expert and this is fiction.

Embarking on a new spur of the moment adventure (as a proper one should) seemingly without direction. Fall has encroached the air with a chill, that moment right when summer ends and rain brings mud and chaos.
